The Health Directorate of [District Name] organised a crucial meeting on the mass administration of onchocerciasis drugs, also known as the Oncho Mass Drug Administration (MDA), to address the endemic threat in the district. Chairperson’s Address
Mr. Alhaji Abdul Suyuyini was appointed as the chairperson for the meeting. In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to God, the participants, and the Ghana Health Service for their efforts in combating onchocerciasis. He emphasised the significance of public education, acceptance, and innovative approaches to tackle river blindness. The meeting, he stated, aimed to ensure the effective distribution of the drugs to the community.
Presentation by Rev. Emmanuel Partey
Rev. Emmanuel Partey, the District Health Director, provided an in-depth presentation on the Oncho MDA program. He highlighted that onchocerciasis is an endemic issue affecting seven zones in Ghana, with 140 districts in the country identified as areas of concern. A 2017 assessment confirmed the district’s status as one of the regions requiring immediate intervention.
Rev. Partey explained that a new drug would be used for the MDA campaign this time around, and eligibility would include individuals aged four years and above. He outlined precautions, including contraindications for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and those with allergies. The MDA campaign is scheduled to take place between 24th January and 8th February 2025. Rev. Partey urged stakeholders to educate and encourage community members to participate. He stressed that dosage would depend on age and adherence to strict guidelines, including abstinence from alcohol two hours before and after taking the medication.
Stakeholders were encouraged to spread awareness and dispel myths about the drugs. The program concluded with an appeal for all contributors to collaborate in developing effective implementation strategies.
