INAUGURATION OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE.

The Twifo/Ati-Morkwa district assembly’s National disaster management organisation (NADMO) on Thursday 25th August, 20225 inaugurated a district disaster management committee to help reduce risks, ensure community resilience and enhance disaster management efforts.

The 16member committee, chaired by the Distrct Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Isaac Yawson, was instituted in line with the NADMO ACT, ACT 927 for disaster risk management, reduction and mitigation.

It was aimed at managing disasters by coordinating resources, promoting disaster rush reduction activities and enhancing community-based response mechanisms to reduce disasters.

The event witnessed by high profiled personalities, was not just a ceremonial occasion but a signal of shared commitment of safeguarding the lives and livelihoods, and encouraging the people to eschew acts that trigger preventable disasters.

In an address by the DCE, “disaster disrupts activities of a community and are mostly beyond the communitys potentiality of handling it. Consequently, it may displace people. It therefore becomes the responsibility of the national disaster and management organiastion to ensure the safety of persons.

The committee in fulfilment of ACT 279 is established under the NADMO ACT to prepare plans for the committee

He expressed his frustration in the fight against the menace galamsey. Unfamiliar persons seen within the community should be questioned on their area of work and if found to be engaging in illegal activities, they should be brought to book, this he charged committee members and other invitees.

In concluding his remarks, a quote from Benjamin franklin was shared with all gathered “By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail”, as such members of the committee should plan adequately to help prevent or reduce disaster cases within the district.

Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood Mensah, the Central Regional Director of NADMO, in his remarks, explained the urgent need for the committee to mitigate risks with the current situation in the district.

He mentioned that the district with diverse topography and rich ecosystem was facing threats of natural and human induced disasters which needed urgent attention and measures for reduction.
